07mar2007 Latest Slackware 11.0 install ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Installed on[PIII800 500RAM]: onto D: drive (separate physical drive) Installed From:Shiney new SlackWare 11.0 DVD bootdisk Shove DVD into drive and boot up on slackware 11.0 DVD -hit enter / -type root + [ENTER] -type cfdisk /dev/hdb + [ENTER] (hdb=second physical drive) make 3 particians as follows: (this is how it must appear inside cfdisk) hdb1 Boot Primary Linux ext2 3994.49 hdn2 Primary Linux ext2 1998.75 hdb3 Primary Linux swap 485.50 (if this is a re-install or upgrade just re-write over the particians) Quit cfdisk -type setup + [ENTER] select "Set up your target particians" go ahead and format, use ext2 (Standard Linux Ext2 Filesystem) select 4096 inode density(default) format each linux partician as above use "/home" for 2nd linux partician mount point add hda particians as:"c\system" and "d\bin" select "Install from a Slackware CD or DVD" + OK Select "auto" + OK PACKAGE SERIES SELECTION:: just press [ENTER] SELECT PROMPTING MODE:: just press [ENTER] It'll be a while.(20mins) Watch for errors- (iso corrupt?) INSTALL LINUX KERNEL - select cdrom + [ENTER] select /cdrom/kernels/bare.i/bzImage + [ENTER] MAKE A BOOTDISK - go ahead and make 1 MODEM CONFIGURATION - select no modem(whats a modem?) ENABLE HOTPLUG/UDEV SUBSYSTEM AT BOOT? scans box for cards usb devices etc.. if you have something you think Slack might not find DO NOT enable this, else enable it eg.. dbv, tv or datanetsat card safest is to not enable this INSTALL LILO - select "simple" + [ENTER] CONFIGURE LILO TO USE FRAME BUFFER CONSOLE? - select "standard" + [ENTER] OPTIONAL LILO append="" LINE type in hdc=ide-scsi (Slack will treat your CD or DVD as a SCSI drive) SELECT LILO DESTINATI0N - select "MBR" + [ENTER] MOUSE CONFIGURATION - select "usb" + [ENTER] GPM CONFIGURATION - select "yes" + [ENTER] CONFIGURE NETWORK - do it if ya got 1 CONFIRM STARTUP SERVICES TO RUN - select everything but: rc.atalk rc.dnsmasq rc.ip.foward rc.mysqld rc.rpc rc.saslauthd WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY OUT SOME CUSTOM FONTS - select "no" + [ENTER] HARDWARE CLOCK SET TO UTC? - set to "US/PACIFIC" + [ENTER] SELECT DEFAULT WINDOW MANAGER FOR X - i use KDE WARNING: NO ROOT PASSWORD DETECTED - enter a password Thats it uve completed a basic Slackware install EXIT Slackware Linux Setup, remove DVD and re-boot 'em ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BASIC INSTALL COMPLETE We've still got a few more things 2 do, from the console(dos prompt) set up the following -alsaconf = sets up soundcard -removepkg bsd-games (removes goofy startup slogans) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now we move on to xWindows (type startx at console) add/change what ever shortcuts you want to desktop how to add the "show desktop s-cut to the quick launch bar??" right click on the taskbar-->Add aplet to Panel --> select show desktop MOUSE(USB)WheelMouse: add this to: etc/X11/xorg.conf Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" PRINTER[Samsung SCX-4200]: piked out the printer drivers from a larger file but still no luck key here is to expand the printer driver package or file manually. xwindows will show the files inside the package even though they are not yet expanded. added XMMS to the desktop by adding a shortcut to an application direct shortcut to: usr/bin/XMMS -edit /etc/fstab = soasto include whatever drives you have setup i have this file premade-find at z_linux/hal1 TODO: install mplayer or at least dl/copy the correct windoze drivers neded to play .wmv files where exactly must these files be placed
